ESTABLISHED 1784
Finsley Gate Wharf is one of the original wharves on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal and comprises three main buildings:
The current Forge building has been used for a number of purposes including storage and a stable. The forge was used by the blacksmith to manufacture the metalwork required for the lock gates and boats. The Forge was also used by the farrier who took care of the horses that worked along the canal.
Canal House which is the oldest building on site housed the engineer responsible for the operation of the original “turn bridge” over the canal.
The Warehouse which is three buildings in one was originally used for storage of goods transported along the canal . In later years the west warehouse was used as a sawmill to cut wood for the construction of the boats which were launched straight in to the canal following completion
